The Mechanical Engineering Department started the 3-year diploma course in 1960–61 with an intake capacity of 20 students, but in later years the intake capacity was increased to 40. The intake is done by the competent authority every year in the months of September and October for the diploma. The qualification fixed for entry into the course is matriculation. The mechanical engineering department prepares the students for the various manufacturing industries in the public and private sectors: railways, hospitals, military engineering services, boards and corporations, construction companies, transportation departments, telecommunications, PWD, and rural development. Our department also prepares the students for self-employment in areas such as repair, maintenance, refrigeration, air conditioning, fabrication of steel and wood furniture, etc. Many of the students at this institute are successful entrepreneurs. We focus on imparting technical and practical knowledge to the student. We believe in the overall development of the student and prepare them to serve the nation on technical grounds. The course of the mechanical engineering diploma is directed towards modern manufacturing processes, repair and maintenance, and quality control. New subjects like CNC machines and automation, computer applications, and CAD have been included to meet the hi-tech requirements of the manufacturing industries in the public and private sectors. Our department is fully equipped with the latest and most modern laboratories. CNC and mechatronics are the most high-tech labs in our institute. The lab is equipped with the latest CNC milling machines, CNC lathe machines, robotics, pneumatics, and hydraulics equipment. The CAD lab of our institute is equipped with 20 of the latest configuration computers with the latest software and networking to provide extensive training in the design and development of prototypes and other equipment. The other laboratories of our department are the applied mechanics lab, the strength of material lab equipped with a computerized torsion machine, the UTM, the hardness testing machine, the impact testing machine, the fluid machinery lab, the material science lab, the applied thermal lab, the refrigeration and air-conditioning lab, and the metrology lab. Our department also has computer-learning resources, which help the students understand the subject easily and clearly and increase their knowledge. The Government of Jammu and kashmir inked an MOU with Tata Technologies Ltd. pune in 2020 and established the CIIIT Centre to bridge the gap between industry and the institute. The CIIIT Centre comprises nine competency centers for cutting-edge technology such as additive manufacturing, mechanical execution systems, robotics, IOT, and mechatronics, as well as many of the most recent software packages such as Ansys, Creo, and PLM. This CIIIT Centre is a game changer for the Jammu region of J&K UT ,it has been helping students to learn new technology and make them ready for industry. Along with other branches of engineering, mechanical engineering students learn cutting-edge technology and are involved in activity-based learning with their peers. In keeping with NEP 2020 and the global peace, the mechanical engineering department developed a new curriculum for 2022 that is in line with NEP. One of the main requirements is that the syllabus match NSQF levels and to provide students greater freedom in selecting their subjects and the option of a multi-entry and multi-exit system.

Staff of Mechanical Engineering Department |
The staff of mechanical engineering includes lectures, demonstrators and technicians. All the staff of mechanical department is well qualified, sincere, dedicated and experienced. Two of the lecturer of our department had undergone a fellow ship-training programme under World Bank scheme in Germany in the year 2004-05 for three months in the field of automation. To meet the technical requirements of the diploma our department also sends the staff for various short-term courses to NITTTR Chandigarh, which is the technical and academic consultant of our department.
