Govt. Polytechnic, Jammu was established in the year 1960 for imparting Technical Education to the youth of the state, especially Jammu Division. The institution was started to meet the technical education requirements of young males and females. It is a premier Institution of the State.
The institute was started initially with the following three years Diploma Courses:

Later on, the Draftsman courses were closed by the Government and more Diploma courses were started which are as under:

At present eight Diploma Courses are being offered by this institution. All the above courses are recognised by the J&K Government and approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). AICTE is an apex body constituted by the Government of India for granting approval to the Technical Institutions of all the levels i.e. Diploma, Degree and Post Graduate and Monitoring the working of all such Technical Institutions within the Country.
Location: Govt. Polytechnic, Jammu is located at Bikram Chowk, the busiest Chowk of the Capital city, Jammu. It is called the “HEART” of the city. It is about 2 Kms from General Bus Stand and 3 Kms from Airport and Railway Station each. It has about 112 Kanals of land comprising of Administrative Block, Staff Quarters, Auditorium Canteen and a Guest house.
